We Love to Read!

posted Feb 15, 2012 8:46 AM by Joshua Lindquist

Dear Families,

What better way to spend these cold winter nights than to cozy up with a mug of cocoa and a good book? February is I Love to Read month, and we have many fun activities planned for the children here at Dr. Knight.  Be sure to note the events listed in the side bar and watch your child’s backpack for more information about upcoming events.

This year’s theme for I Love to Read month is Wheeling Through Books. Students (and their families!) are encouraged to read as much as possible during I Love to Read month.  Just like in years past, students received a pink sheet where they are to record the number of minutes they read each week.  These slips are to be turned in to their classroom teacher every Monday.  (Parents, please make sure you sign your name on these slips.)  For every 100 minutes read, a student will receive 1 ticket towards the KEA Carnival, which will be held April 27.

New this year, the KEA, along with Horace Mann and Ron Bauer Insurance, are sponsoring a bike giveaway for Dr. Knight students.  Each student that has met his/her classroom reading goal will have a chance to win a new bike!  (See the reverse side of this sheet for the criteria to be entered into the bike drawing.)   Our students and staff are so excited about this opportunity, and there is much excitement surrounding the new bikes that are appearing in the media center!

Sometimes we hear people ask: Why is reading important?  Here are just a few answers to that question:

Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society.
Reading is an important skill in finding a good job.
Reading is important because it develops the mind.
Reading helps us discover new information.
Reading develops the imagination.
Reading is fundamental in helping one to develop a good self-image.
Reading helps us better understand words and write better.

Finally, why is reading important? Reading is important because words — spoken and written – are the building blocks of life.
Let’s help our children become great readers and writers!

READ, READ, READ, and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE.

Happy Reading! And happy I Love to Read month!

Dear Families:

Welcome!  On behalf of the Little Falls School District, we would like to welcome you to Dr. S. G. Knight Elementary School.  It is a real pleasure to be here with you and your child to continue in the tradition of strong, academic excellence.  We believe Dr. S. G. Knight Elementary offers your child the best academic opportunity available to help prepare and succeed in a challenging world.  This school year, we continue to have the latest in technology with SMART Boards in all classrooms for interactive learning, iPads for all 5th graders and iPod Touch devices for grades K-4.  With this technology, we will be expanding the scope of learning in classrooms and helping children succeed to new and greater achievement levels.

The staff and I hope that you will sense the strong spirit of community, family involvement, cooperation and encouragement that is part of Dr. S. G. Knight Elementary School.

At Dr. S. G. Knight Elementary, our commitment is to children.  Your child will receive the best education because your child’s success is our concern.  We have an energetic, dedicated and caring staff who are experts in their fields.  It is our goal that your child meet his/her highest learning potential in every situation.

Please takes some time to read the handbook on our website (add link here).  It contains helpful information on school policies and procedures.  It also contains a school calendar of important events.  After reading and sharing this information with your child, we hope you will keep this handbook link bookmarked for future reference throughout the school year.

We all want to thank you for selecting Dr. S. G. Knight Elementary School.  Please join us as partners in your child’s education to ensure that your child’s experience is filled with much joy and success.

The staff and I look forward to an exciting year with you and your child.  Together we will make this a memorable and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Maxine Strege, Ph.D.
