Dear Families, What better way to spend these cold winter nights than to cozy up with a mug of cocoa and a good book? February is I Love to Read month, and we have many fun activities planned for the children here at Dr. Knight. Be sure to note the events listed in the side bar and watch your child’s backpack for more information about upcoming events. This year’s theme for I Love to Read month is Wheeling Through Books. Students (and their families!) are encouraged to read as much as possible during I Love to Read month. Just like in years past, students received a pink sheet where they are to record the number of minutes they read each week. These slips are to be turned in to their classroom teacher every Monday. (Parents, please make sure you sign your name on these slips.) For every 100 minutes read, a student will receive 1 ticket towards the KEA Carnival, which will be held April 27. New this year, the KEA, along with Horace Mann and Ron Bauer Insurance, are sponsoring a bike giveaway for Dr. Knight students. Each student that has met his/her classroom reading goal will have a chance to win a new bike! (See the reverse side of this sheet for the criteria to be entered into the bike drawing.) Our students and staff are so excited about this opportunity, and there is much excitement surrounding the new bikes that are appearing in the media center! Sometimes we hear people ask: Why is reading important? Here are just a few answers to that question: • Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society. • Reading is an important skill in finding a good job. • Reading is important because it develops the mind. • Reading helps us discover new information. • Reading develops the imagination. • Reading is fundamental in helping one to develop a good self-image. • Reading helps us better understand words and write better. Finally, why is reading important? Reading is important because words — spoken and written – are the building blocks of life. Let’s help our children become great readers and writers! READ, READ, READ, and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. Happy Reading! And happy I Love to Read month! -Dr. Strege and Dr. Knight Teachers |
