Little Falls Community High School is pleased to announce that it has been selected as an Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) school – one of the first school district to be selected in Minnesota! AFE is a partnership between Amazon and Edhesive to improve access to computer science education in communities currently underrepresented in the technology field.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, by 2020 there will be 1.4 million computer science-related jobs available and only 400,000 computer science graduates with the skills to apply for those jobs. Many students eager to fill that gap and obtain a high paying job in technology do not have access to computer science in their high schools. Often schools want to offer these courses to their students but do not have access to curriculum and/or teacher support materials.

Amazon and Edhesive are partnering to address this gap by sponsoring teachers and administrators who demonstrate this need and are committed to bringing computer science to their school with access to courses such as Introduction to Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A–Java courses. This content also includes access to support forums for both students and educators new to learning or teaching computer science.

Little Falls Community High School will be offering a semester-long Introduction to Computer Science course beginning with the 2019-2020 school year; registration information will be available to students this spring. Two additional Advance Placement Computer Science Courses will be available to students in subsequent years, filling out a hearty pathway for students interested in this high-demand field.

For those planning to take their CS education even further, Amazon is supporting students studying Computer Science with $10,000 scholarships! Amazon is excited to invest in college scholarships for students pursuing computer science. Students from communities currently underrepresented in the technology field who have completed or are currently taking an AP CS course and have been accepted to an accredited four-year university can apply for a scholarship award of $10,000 per student for tuition. This award is for students who plan to pursue a CS major in college. Amazon encourages Edhesive AP CS students to apply, but it is not a requirement.
