Finance, Facilities, and Potential School Closures

Little Falls Community Schools has always taken pride in serving its students and families with dedication, care, and a commitment to excellence. As we look ahead, the district is entering an important period of reflection and planning, facing tough financial realities, but also working proactively to ensure a strong and sustainable future. Among the options being carefully considered is the potential closure of Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary School in Randall, Minnesota—a decision that, while deeply challenging, is part of a broader effort to protect and strengthen educational opportunities for all students in our district.

Our financial challenges did not emerge overnight. They have been growing for years. Since June 2022, the district has already cut more than $3.5 million from its budget, primarily through staffing reductions and administrative restructuring. Positions such as the Assistant Superintendent, Director of Teaching & Learning, and several instructional coaches have been eliminated. Athletic and extracurricular programs have also seen reductions.

Yet despite these efforts, projections indicate that without further cuts, the district will soon face a legally defined financial crisis. This reality has prompted the district and stakeholders to explore more permanent solutions, including school consolidation.

Since 1972, the district has operated five school buildings. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, enrollment exceeded 3,500 students. Today, that number has declined to approximately 2,300—a reduction of nearly one-third. This trend is further compounded by Minnesota’s declining birth rates, which have dropped 21% between 2007 and 2022, limiting future enrollment growth.

Closing Dr. Knight Elementary, the district’s smallest and costliest school, is being considered as a strategic move. While the 2016 referendum did invest nearly $3 million in the building to address mold and indoor air quality issues, those upgrades were necessary at the time to protect the health of students and staff and preserve the building from condemnation. However, that investment alone cannot justify ongoing operational inefficiencies.

Financially, Dr. Knight Elementary stands out for its high per-student costs. In 2021–22, staffing costs at Dr. Knight exceeded the district average by $6,145 per student. By 2024–25, that gap was reduced but still significant at $2,767 per student. The potential savings from closing the school are estimated at over $1.1 million annually, money that could be reinvested into classrooms, programming, and staff across the district.

Critically, closing Dr. Knight would not increase class sizes elsewhere in the district. Projections for the 2025–26 school year show average class sizes holding steady at 23 students per classroom, whether or not the building remains open.

Should the closure move forward, the district has pledged to work collaboratively with the City of Randall and local stakeholders to find a meaningful new purpose for the facility, ensuring it remains a community asset.

This decision is not being taken lightly. It involves weighing the importance of neighborhood schools, community identity, and historical investment against the urgent need for long-term financial health. However, with the goal of protecting the quality of education for all students in District 482, the potential closure of Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary stands as a difficult but possibly necessary step in navigating the district’s financial future.
